The two movements of Ellipses depict the yearly cycle of blooming and freezing created by the seasons. The work could conceivably be played in a continuous cycle, as the end of each movement bridges to the beginning of the other. In performance each movement is played once, but the order of the movements is variable.
The word ellipses is conveniently a plural form of ellipse and ellipsis - Earth follows an elliptical orbit round the sun every year, and both movements end with a musical ellipsis, or a suggestion of more to come.
