Two Recitatives (2015)

Program Note

In my Two Recitatives, for violin and clarinet, both performers are given an opportunity to be a soloist. Recitative #1 features the violin, hushed by a practice mute, amidst a fog of quiet multiphonic trills in the clarinet. Throughout the movement, the violin’s open A string obscures its ephemeral melodic line. For Recitative #2, the violin's mute comes off, the clarinet ascends into a more piercing register, and the sonorities become harsher. The clarinet wails ferociously above a driving violin ostinato.
